WFMW Fabric Softener Economy

I love the way my laundry feels and smells when I add laundry softener. What I don't like is a heavy aroma or decreased towel absorbency and most of all, the gunk that can accumulate in the automatic dispenser after a while.
So, I save an empty bottle. I buy the large sized bottles, like Sauvitel, or a carton of refill.
When my big bottle is empty and I buy another bottle, I pour half of the new bottle into the old one. I then fill both of them up with water. Not only do I get twice as much for the same price, I notice very little difference in the effectiveness - with the exception of a less strong fragrance and greater towel absorbency.
I have to buy product only half as often, I clean the dispenser a LOT less, and my laundry still has a pleasant fragrance and softness.

Try it for one bottle. If you don't think you are getting as much "bang" as you like, you can always go back to undiluted. However, if you can't discern a great difference, like me, you can save a few pennies here and there. :-)

Works for me!

Good tip. I personally don't use fabric softener with towels because of the decreased absorbency. I have used distilled white vinegar in the fabric softener cup for towels and they come out fresher smelling. I like the idea of diluting it down for other laundry though. I have some favorite smelling fabric softener that is discontinued. This would make it last longer. Thanks for sharing!

That is a good tip. What I have done in the past is to fill a spray bottle about 1/2 full of fabric softener and 1/2 water. Then, I spray a washcloth (you need to dedicate one to the laundry because it will eventually discolor it a bit) about 4-5 times and throw it in the dryer with my clothes. It is like a homemade fabric softener sheet, yet is loads cheaper and I like the way my clothes feel a lot better, too.

I just found your wonderful blog, and this great tip! I've given up softness for absorption and have been really missing it. Now I discover that I really can have it all! :-) Thanks for the idea, can't wait to try it out on the next load of laundry.
